Criteria for Eye Donation

Who Can Donate Eyes:

  • Anybody from the age between 2-80 years.
  • Donation can be made irrespective of age, sex, caste or community.
  • People who wear spectacles, or have undergone cataract surgery.
  • People who have diabetes, hypertension or cardiac problem.
  • People blind due retinal or optic nerve disease can also donate.

The ultimate decision about usage for transplantation will be made after evaluation by the Medical Director.

The cornea should be removed within 6 to 8 hours of death. 

Eyes of donated person can restore the vision of two or more corneal blind people.

Eye removal takes only 15-20 minutes and leaves no scar or disfigurement of the face.

Who Cannot Donate Eyes:

  • Hepatitis-A,B,C
  • Septicaemia, Leukaemia, Tuberculosis
  • Viral encephalitis, Rabies
  • Neurogenerative disease such as Alzheimer, dementia, Parkinson etc.
  • Syphilis
  • Covid
  • Intrinsic eye disease
  • Death due to poisoning
  • Infection
  • Unknown cause of Death
